ACOUSTIC JAM
Acoustic Music Jam Session
a.k.a. Pickers' Anonymous
Fellowship Hall
2nd & 4th Thursdays at First from 7:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m.
(We usually run past 10 o'clock!)
Do you sing and/or play guitar, mandolin, fiddle, banjo, dobro, harmonica, autoharp or doghouse bass? Are you a bluegrass fan? Do you enjoy old-time gospel music? Do you like to have fun? Do you enjoy sitting in a circle and tapping your feet while you listen? Then, have we got a fun activity for you!
Every second and fourth Thursday night a group of church members and their friends fill the Fellowship Hall with familiar sounds of bluegrass and old-time gospel music with a friendly acoustic jam session.
What is a jam session and how does it work? Tom Barnwell of the South Eastern Bluegrass Association (S.E.B.A.) has written an excellent description. <CLICK HERE> to read the details in An Introduction to Bluegrass Jamming.
Visitors are always welcome. Pickers and singers of ALL skill levels are more than welcome. This is not about being professional, it's about having some good clean fellowship and fun in the Lord's house. Everyone fits in and no one is put "on-the-spot." In fact, the more experienced musicians love nothing better than helping those that are learning with some new "licks."
Guest artists visiting with us thus far have included, but are certainly not limited to: Al Batten (Al Batten & the Bluegrass Reunion), Lloyd Herring (The Grass Cats), Matt Hooper (Kickin' Grass), Shaun Jenkins (Diamond Creek Bluegrass), Kandis Johnson (Diamond Creek Bluegrass), Russell Johnson (The Grass Cats & New Vintage Bluegrass), Rick Keen (The Churchmen), Tony McLamb (The Tony McLamb Band), Larry Nunnery (The Boys from Carolina Bluegrass Band), Ann Ortiz and Fiddlin' Troy (Hanna's Creek String Band). You never know who is going to stop by to share some licks and friendship.
This twice monthly event has turned into much more than just a good idea for fun and an in-house event. We're receiving promotion from the stage during many performances of the bands and groups listed above. A loyal friend, Tim Woodall makes mention every chance he gets on his weekly radio production, The Pine Cone Bluegrass Show. As a result, we're being visited by new and old friends from all over. Don't just sit there and read about it. Come on out this Thursday and join in the fun.
If pickin' is your thing, or if you know someone that loves the music, come on by or point them in the right direction. We are proud to note that as a result of this weekly fun, an enormous fund-raising program has been launched to support the Mid-High and Senior High Youth of First Presbyterian Church. Be sure to visit the page for PresbyFEST 2008.
There is a weekly email reminder sent to everyone that asks to be placed on the mailing list. To be added to the list, notify Robert Jordan robertajordan@nc.rr.com.
